NC Oyster Festival: October 20-21, 2012 will mark the 32nd Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival offering a fun mixture of new activities and old favorites that are certain to entertain the entire family! The Winds Beach Resort Spring 2012 Newsletter It’s been a busy winter at The Winds! Our staff has been working hard doing all kinds of maintenance and improvements on the rooms and facilities, upgrading our add-ons for your stays and planning new activities for our guests! We want to provide guests the best we can offer! A New Decor And More! Our philosophy has always been “There’s no standing still in this business you’re either upgrading or falling behind!” All Winter long we’ve been busy improving The Winds continuing to transform the decor of a number of our rooms to the nostalgic beach cottage look that everyone fondly remembers. We’ve heard many requests for more king beds and we’ve listened to you. We’ve switched our queen beds out for king size in our Azalea Suites and later this spring we will also be changing three bedrooms in each of our six bedroom cottages to one king bed in each bedroom to make them more family friendly. There will still be two doubles in each of the remaining three bedrooms in those cottages. Also six of our Camellia Guest Rooms will have one king bed in them. We’ve also transformed some of our two bedroom units to feature a king size bed with two doubles in the other room. A number of kitchens and living areas in our suites have new cabinets and tile flooring. Also, our furniture, artwork and bedding are continually being updated to give us a more contemporary look. Also lots and lots of new paint! We’ve also added a brand new treadmill to the fitness room. This, in addition to the new gym equipment we put in last year, offers all new equipment!  We’ve also resurfaced the indoor pool! Check out all of our improvements on your next visit! New Wireless Internet Perhaps one of the biggest improvements at The Winds is our new wireless internet system. We had many problems with our previous system and made the decision to start all over with a new system.  It has been in place since this past fall and our guests seem to be happy with the new system. We apologize to any guests who may have had a problem with the old system and hope they will be pleasantly surprised by our new WiFi! Ocean Isle & Area Events There’s a whole lot of good times to be had at the beach this year – festivals, a concert series, fishing and golf tournaments and more. Local Artist and author Miller Pope was born in South Carolina but spent most of his career during the “golden age of illustration” in the New York advertising and publishing arenas, after getting his start on the Marine Corps’ legendary Leatherneck magazine.

Miller studied figure drawing at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., at the Art Students League in New York City.

His works have appeared on novel covers and in major magazines. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators in 1957.

Miller (founder of The Winds Resort Beach Club) was recently the subject of a feature article in the January issue of Our State Magazine.

This book illustrates and describes the exploits of Ocean Isle Beach pirates, the rise of large plantations, our Revolutionary War fighters, the salt mills, the dueling matches, the Civil War wrecks, the Prohibition years of Ocean Isle Beach liquor smuggling, the 1920’s Ocean Isle Beach dance hall, the World War II shipwrecks here, the hard work of Mr. Odell Williamson (founder of Ocean Isle Beach), and the town’s public servant individuals today.

This book is not intended to be comprehensive in its coverage of the history of this area, but rather to provide a glimpse into the trials, tribulations, successes, and failures of people who worked and lived here years ago.

In many respects, everyone who lives or visits Ocean Isle Beach owes what we have today to our forebearers who fought the good fight for us here – from Colonists who fought the British, to Confederate soldiers defending blockade runners at Tubbs Inlet, to Coast Guardsmen stationed on Ocean Isle Beach during World War II.

The authors have tried diligently in this book to record the exact day and year of historical events in this area. Indeed this whole book is laid out chronologically beginning with the American Indians who lived at Ocean Isle Beach thousands of years before Europeans arrived, and ending with names and pictures of current Ocean Isle Beach public servant individuals.

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia states: “the first permanent photograph was made in 1826 by Joseph Nicephore Niepce using a sliding wooden box camera made by Charles and Vincent Chevalier in Paris.” Therefore, pre-1826 pictures in this book are mostly depictions of what places and things and people may have looked like. Among the more than 200 pictures total in this book, the post-1826 pictures in contrast are mostly actual and authentic.
